Swedish citizenship can be acquired (obtained) in different ways, including automatically, through an application, or by notification.

In some cases, a child may become a Swedish citizen automatically for example through birth, adoption, the marriage of their parents, or if a parent becomes a Swedish citizen.
In some cases, a notification for Swedish citizenship must be filed for children who were born abroad before 1 April 2015 with a Swedish father.
If you are a Swedish citizen who was born and resides abroad, you may in certain circumstances lose your Swedish citizenship when you turn 22.
If you lost your Swedish citizenship at the age of 22, you may under some circumstances regain Swedish citizenship through an application.
If you are unsure whether you or your child is a Swedish citizen, you may apply to the Swedish Migration Agency for a declaration of citizenship.
On the Swedish Migration Agency’s website, you can find information about how to submit an application or notification related to Swedish citizenship. Depending on the type of case and where you live, applications may be submitted through an e-service, by post directly to the Swedish Migration Agency, or through a Swedish embassy, or in some cases a consulate, if you live abroad.
