Application to regain Swedish citizenship if you lost it at the age of 22

If you live in Australia and wish to apply to regain Swedish citizenship if you have lost if at the age of 22, you can submit your application through the Embassy of Sweden in Canberra.

The Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket) is responsible for matters relating to Swedish citizenship. On their website, you will find information about applying to regain Swedish citizenship if you have lost it at the age of 22, including requirements.

How to submit your application 

If you live in Australia, you can submit your application:

  • In person at the Embassy of Sweden in Canberra.

If you are visiting Sweden, you can send your application directly to the Swedish Migration Agency by mail. The address can be found on the Swedish Migration Agency's website. 

Preparations 

The application form and information about which documents should be submitted can be found on the Swedish Migration Agency's website.

  • Application form: The form may be completed digitally but must be printed out and signed by hand with a ballpoint pen. Electronic signatures are not accepted. The original form must be submitted.
  • Copies of other documents: Copies that are submitted should be certified.  

There is no fee for applying to regain Swedish citizenship if you have lost it at the age of 22.

The following applies if you wish to submit an application at the Embassy of Sweden in Canberra, Australia, to regain Swedish citizenship if you have lost it at the age of 22:

  1. Book an appointment: Send your appointment request by email to the Embassy: embassy.canberra@gov.se.
  2. Personal attendance: You must hand in your own application.
  3. Bring documents: The completed application form in original and certified copies of other documents.
  4. Issuing of certified copies: If you bring original documents to the Embassy, certified copies can be issued for a fee.
  5. Check accepted payment methods: If you are to pay a fee, you must check in advance which payment methods are accepted at the Embassy. More information can be found here: Fees and payment methods.
  6. Read visitor’s information: Follow any instructions provided before your visit for example about arrival time, parking, and accompanying persons.
