Application to retain Swedish citizenship after the age of 22

If you live in Australia and wish to apply to retain your Swedish citizenship after the age of 22, you can submit your application through the Embassy of Sweden in Canberra.

The Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket) is responsible for matters relating to Swedish citizenship. On their website, you will find information about applying to retain Swedish citizenship after the age of 22, including requirements.

How to submit your application 

If you live in Australia, you can submit your application:

  • In person at the Embassy of Sweden in Canberra.
  • By post to: Embassy of Sweden, 5 Turrana Street, Yarralumla ACT 2600.
  • In person at the Honorary Consulates of Sweden in Adelaide, Brisbane, Cairns, Darwin, Hobart, Melbourne, Perth or Sydney. The Consulate will forward the application to the Embassy.

If you are visiting Sweden, you can send your application directly to the Swedish Migration Agency by mail. The address can be found on the Swedish Migration Agency's website. 

Preparations 

The application form and information about which documents should be submitted can be found on the Swedish Migration Agency's website.

  • Application form: The form may be completed digitally but must be printed out and signed by hand with a ballpoint pen. Electronic signatures are not accepted. The original form must be submitted.
  • Copies of other documents: Copies that are submitted should be certified.

There is no fee for applying to retain Swedish citizenship after the age of 22. 

Checklist 

The following applies if you wish to submit an application to retain Swedish citizenship after the age of 22 at Sweden’s Embassy or Honorary Consulates in Australia:

  1. Book an appointment: Send your appointment request by email:
    Embassy in Canberra: embassy.canberra@gov.se
    Honorary Consulates: Contact details are available at the bottom of this page.
  2. Bring your application: Bring the completed application form in original and certified copies of other documents.
  3. Issuing of certified copies: If you bring original documents to the Embassy or Consulate, certified copies can be issued for a fee.
  4. Check accepted payment methods: If you are to pay a fee, you must check in advance which payment methods are accepted at the Embassy or Consulate. More information can be found here: Fees and payment methods.
  5. Read visitor’s information: Follow any instructions provided before your visit about for example arrival time, parking, and accompanying persons. 

    After the application has been submitted 

    Applications related to Swedish citizenship submitted in Australia are forwarded to the Swedish Migration Agency for processing.

    When the Swedish Migration Agency begins processing your case, you will be contacted if additional information or documents are required.

    If you have questions about the processing of your case, including processing times, please contact the Swedish Migration Agency.

    Once a decision has been made 

    When the Swedish Migration Agency has made a decision in your case, the decision will be sent to the Embassy of Sweden in Canberra if you live in Australia. The Embassy will contact you with information about how you can receive the decision.
