Notification of Swedish citizenship for children born abroad before 1 April 2015 with a Swedish father

If you live in Australia and wish to submit a notification of Swedish citizenship for a child born outside Sweden before 1 April 2015 to a Swedish father, you can submit your notification through the Embassy of Sweden in Canberra.

The Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket) is responsible for matters relating to Swedish citizenship. On their website, you will find information about notification of Swedish citizenship for children born abroad before 1 April 2015 with a Swedish father, including requirements.

How to submit your notification 

If the child is not listed in the Swedish Population Register and you live in Australia, you can submit your notification:

  • In person at the Embassy of Sweden in Canberra.

If the child is listed in the Swedish Population Register, you should instead send your notification directly to the Swedish Migration Agency by mail. The address can be found on the Swedish Migration Agency's website. 

Preparations 

The notification form and information about which documents should be submitted can be found on the Swedish Migration Agency's website.

  • Notification form: The form may be completed digitally but must be printed out and signed by hand with a ballpoint pen. Electronic signatures are not accepted. The original form must be submitted.
  • Consent: It is the child’s father who must submit a notification of Swedish citizenship for the child. If the child has more than one parent/legal guardian, all guardians must approve the notification. Children who have reached the age of 12 must consent to becoming a Swedish citizen.
  • Copies of other documents: Copies that are submitted should be certified by the Embassy.

A fee applies for submitting this type of notification, and for having certified copies issued at the Embassy. More information can be found below. 

Checklist 

The following applies if you wish to submit a notification at the Embassy of Sweden in Canberra, Australia, for Swedish citizenship for a child born abroad before 1 april 2015 with a Swedish father:

  1. Book an appointment: Send your appointment request by email to the Embassy: embassy.canberra@gov.se.
  2. Personal attendance: The child’s father must submit the notification and the child who the notification concerns must also attend.
  3. Bring documents: The completed notification form and other documents must be brought in original.
  4. Check payment methods: For payment of the notification fee and for the issuing of certified copies, you must check in advance which payment methods are accepted at the Embassy. More information can be found here: Fees and payment methods.
  5. Read visitor’s information: Follow any instructions provided before your visit for example about arrival time, parking, and accompanying persons.
