General information about passports and national ID cards

As a Swedish citizen, you can apply for a Swedish passport or national ID card. Here you can find general information about the application and collection process, including what applies in Australia.

A person may be issued a maximum of three passports during a five-year period. 

Validity and use 

Passports and national ID cards are valid Swedish travel documents that can be used for different areas.

  • For persons aged 12 and over, the validity period is five years.
  • For children under 12 years of age, the validity period is three years.
  • For persons born and residing abroad, the validity period may be limited at the age of 22 if it cannot be established that the applicant will retain Swedish citizenship after the age of 22.

Application and collection 

You can apply for a Swedish passport or national ID card at a Swedish passport authority abroad or with the Swedish Police in Sweden. When you apply, you may choose where the issued document should be sent. Regardless of where you apply, the issued document can be sent to any Swedish passport authority abroad or passport office in Sweden.

Swedish honorary consulates abroad are not passport authorities and therefore cannot receive applications for ordinary passports or national ID cards. However, they can often, on behalf of a passport authority, hand out issued passports and national ID cards and handle matters relating to emergency passports.

Fees 

The following fees apply in passport and national ID card matters:

  • Application fee: Payable when the application is submitted.
  • Collection fee: Applies if the document is collected at a location other than where the application was submitted.
  • Postage fee: Applies if the document is sent from a passport authority abroad to an honorary consulate.

Where and when payment of a postage and/or collection fee is paid may vary depending on the case.

Proof of identity and Swedish citizenship
