If you have been offered a job in Sweden, you need to apply for a work permit. The easiest way to apply for a work permit is to make an electronic application through the Migration Agency’s web page. If you have completed studies corresponding to an advanced level degree, you can obtain a residence permit to come to Sweden and look for work or explore the possibilities for starting your own business.

The permit may be granted for a minimum of three months and for no more than nine months. During the period that you have this residence permit, your family cannot move to Sweden to live with you.

If the Swedish Migration Agency informed you to book an appointment for an interivew you have to request an appointment for a interview at the Embassy.

If the Swedish Migration Agency asks you to verify your passport, you have two options:

1. If your passport meets certain requirements, you will be instructed to check your passport digitally via a link that you will receive from the Swedish Migration Agency. Please read about the requirements on the Migration Agency’s website Digital passport check – Swedish Migration Agency

2. If your passport does not meet the requirements, you will be instructed to visit the Embassy in person for a passport check. Having received this instruction, you are welcome to the Embassy without appointment on Tuesdays and Thursdays (except when the Embassy is closed) between 2 pm and 3 pm.

Once the Swedish Migration Agency has made a positive decision in your case, a residence permit card will be produced and sent to the Embassy. The time between manufacture and arrival of the card takes between three and four weeks.

When the card has arrived at the Embassy, ​​you will receive an automated email. You can then pick it up without reservation any Tuesday or Thursday (except when the Embassy is closed) between 2 pm and 3 pm. 

If you rather prefer your card to be sent to your referent in Sweden, please let us know at your interview. You will need to fill out and hand in a power of attorney.

An appeal must reach the Embassy within 21 days of receiving the decision. Due to GDPR regulations, the Embassy recommends sending appeals by mail (however, appeals received by email will also be accepted). Appeals may be submitted to the Embassy only on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM. Please note that no original documents of value should be submitted with the appeal and that all documents must be in French, English, or Swedish.

 The appeal must include the following:

• The case number (found on the decision) along with the applicant's name, address, and telephone number.
• The reference number of the decision in question, along with a statement of reasons why the decision is considered incorrect and the desired amendment.
• If someone other than the applicant is appealing the decision, the power of attorney must be included in the appeal.
• The signature of the applicant or the person holding the power of attorney. You may submit additional documents, but please avoid submitting the same documents you submitted with your application and the decision.

The Embassy will then review whether the decision needs to be amended. If no changes are made, the case will be referred to the Swedish administrative court for migration affairs. 

No, it is not possible to apply for asylum at an Embassy abroad. Such an application must be submitted directly to the Swedish Migration Agency or the Swedish Border Police when entering the country.

Those unable to apply for asylum in Sweden are generally advised to contact the nearest UNHCR to their city or place of residence.

When you contact the MFA or a Swedish embassy, you should be met with respect and in a correct manner. Our consular services are based on the Swedish consular regulatory framework and are to be provided consistently, equally and in a legally certain manner irrespective of where you are in the world. Circumstances and regulations vary in different countries and can sometimes influence conditions for consular responsibilities.

What you, as a traveller, need to prepare ahead of a trip abroad: 

• Read up on your travel destination so you know whether the MFA advises against travel and are familiar with the laws and customs that are relevant for you. Travel information and advice is available on the MFA website and on the Sweden Abroad website.
• Download the MFA ‘UD Resklar’ app.
•  Make sure you have insurance that covers the duration of the trip and your planned activities.
• Make sure you have a valid passport and visa when this is necessary. Check with the country’s embassy as to what applies well in advance of your departure.
• Make sure you have enough money for the duration of the trip, including for a return ticket and unforeseen events.
• Notify close relatives of your travel plans and how you can be reached.
• Report your contact information to the ‘Swedish list’ so that we can contact you if needed.

• We do not pay for transport home of a coffi n/urn in the event of a death abroad.
• We cannot infl uence entry and exit provisions of other countries if you are denied entry or exit.
• We cannot interfere in the legal proceedings of other countries.
• If you are arrested by police or are imprisoned abroad, the law of that country always applies. We cannot arrange for special treatment for you on account of your being Swedish.
