Strict introduction of ETA for entry into the United Kingdom

Swedish citizens, including children, must apply for an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) before entering the United Kingdom. From 25 February 2026, eligible visitors without an ETA will not be able to enter the United Kingdom. Apply for an ETA via the British authorities.

Key points:

  • Exception: Swedish citizens residing in Ireland, Guernsey, Jersey or the Isle of Man and travelling from these locations are exempt from the requirement for an ETA if they only travel to and stay in the United Kingdom. Read more about exemptions for residents in Ireland and which documents you need to present  when travelling to the United Kingdom on the UK government's website.
  • Transit: No ETA is needed if you are only transiting through a UK airport without passing through border control (please contact the airline in case of uncertainty).
  • Application:  It is possible to apply for an ETA from March 5, 2025. The application is made digitally via the UK authorities' website or app. The easiest way to apply is by downloading the ETA app.
  • Applies to: All Swedish citizens and travellers from most European countries visiting or transiting through the UK from 2 April 2025.
  • More information: See the UK government’s website for details on the ETA and the application process.

If you have any questions, please contact the UK authorities. The Embassy cannot answer questions about the ETA
