Swedish passport in Ethiopia

Here you will find information regarding the applicable regulations and procedures for applying for Swedish passport or national ID card. The Embassy does not maintain a waiting list for passport applications outside the online booking system. Please note that calling the Embassy's switchboard will not provide access to additional appointment slots. The available appointment slots can be found in the booking system.

Application or Renewal of Swedish Passport and National ID Card

As a Swedish citizen, you may apply for a Swedish passport/national ID card at any Swedish passport authority worldwide and request to collect the passport/national ID card in Addis Ababa, subject to a fee.

To apply/renew a Swedish passport/national ID card at the Embassy in Addis Ababa, all applicants must book an appointment online.

New appointments are released on the last Thursday of each month (or the next working day if it is a holiday) with two months notice. The new slots will then automatically be available in the booking system. Additional appointment may be released through cancellations and changes.

Passport applicants are therefore encouraged to regularly visit the website to check for any available slots.

When visiting the embassy, please observe the following

  • You must have an appointment to apply for a Swedish passport or national ID card. This is done via the Embassy's online booking system.
  • When booking the appointment, ensure that you provide your full name so that it appears correctly on the visitor list at the Embassy.
  • Only you, as the applicant, will be allowed entry to the Embassy. Only applicants listed on the Embassy's visitor list will be admitted.
  • You must present valid photo ID when visiting the Embassy.

Applicants who have booked an appointment at the Embassy should have complete application forms to avoid causing delays for subsequent applicants.

The Embassy also wishes to remind applicants of the importance to cancel any appointment that is no longer needed, so that other applicants have the opportunity to book.

We recommend that Swedish citizen having a valid passport/ ID card take the opportunity to renew these during visits to Sweden, where it is generally easier and significantly cheaper to renew passport/ ID card. You can also request the Swedish police to send the new passport/ ID card to the Eembassy in Addis Ababa, subject to a fee.

If you require an emergency passport for a one-way travel to Sweden, please contact the Embassy via email to book an appointment; ambassaden.addis-abeba-consular@regeringskansliet.se and state that you wish to apply for an emergency passport

Collection time for passport/ ID card

You have 6 months to collect your Swedish passport. You will always be contacted by the Embassy before your passport/national ID card is cancelled.
