Sweden & Bangladesh

Swedish development cooperation with Bangladesh

Sweden has provided development assistance to Bangladesh since the country became independent in 1971. Sweden’s current cooperation strategy for international development cooperation with Bangladesh covers the period 2021–2025, extended until June 2026, and comprises a total of SEK 1.75 billion.

The purpose of the development cooperation is to help improve the conditions that enable people to lift themselves out of poverty, strengthen democracy, promote respect for human rights and gender equality, and support sustainable development, inclusive economic growth, health and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). The cooperation also provides support for sustainable solutions related to the Rohingya crisis and refugee‑hosting areas. Efforts to promote sustainable solutions for Rohingya refugees and host communities will be systematically integrated into all relevant areas and objectives. Another key focus is the prevention of corruption.

Human rights and gender equality

  • Enhanced capacity to promote democratic governance and human rights.
  • Improved conditions for accountability, increased transparency and reduced corruption.
  • Better prospects for a gender-equal society.

Inclusive economic development

  • Greater opportunities for productive employment with decent working conditions.

Climate and environment

  • Limited climate impact and enhanced resilience to climate change and natural disasters.
  • Improved conditions for reduced environmental impact and sustainable use of natural resources.
  • Improved conditions for preservation and restoration of biodiversity.

Health, including sexual and reproductive rights

  • Enhanced capacity to provide high-quality health and medical care.
  • Better opportunities for access to, and respect for, sexual and reproductive health and rights.
