Getting married abroad or in Sweden

If you are planning to get married in Australia or Sweden, the requirements and preparations for marriage may vary depending on your circumstances. The rules governing the registration of marriage also differ between the two countries.

The Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket) is responsible for matters relating to registration of marriages in Sweden.

On the Swedish Tax Agency’s website, you can find information about getting married in Sweden or abroad, including the preparations required before the ceremony and what you need to do afterwards.

Getting married abroad

On the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs’ website (MFA), you can find information about getting married abroad and a list of Swedish embassies authorised to perform marriage ceremonies.

Getting married in Australia 

The Embassy of Sweden in Canberra is not authorised to perform marriage ceremonies.

It is possible to get married through the Swedish Church in some countries abroad, including Australia. On the Swedish Church’s website, you can find information about getting married abroad and wedding locations.

On the Australian Government’s website, you will find information about the rules and requirements for getting married in Australia.
